Dromsong, by Ryan Latimer, takes inspiration from the many layers of meaning embedded in the word "Drom" across various cultures and histories. In Greek, dromos is associated with running and racing, evoking a sense of drive and forward momentum. In Norse languages, drøm (or draumr) connects to the realm of dreams, a space of fluidity and imagination. Old English links drom (or drēam) to feelings of joy, to music and festivity, while in Romani and Slavic traditions, it signifies a communal journey and the freedom to travel. Drawing on these varied, rich associations, Dromsong reflects how we are continually propelled forward—whether though our own physical efforts, by engaging our minds and imagination, or through the collective energy of shared experience.
Commissioned by the University of Birmingham for its 125th anniversary.
